el: Environmental Language’s founder and chief designer is Jill Salisbury. An interior design professional from Chicago, Ms. Salisbury established el with an extensive product and furniture background and a passionate respect for the environment – in every sense.
Through her work in furniture, Ms. Salisbury seeks to develop designs that not only invigorate and entice, but also inspire others to dream of possibilities. Not surprisingly, her furniture delivers a tailored aesthetic that is both high-style and eco-friendly.
Ms. Salisbury’s philosophy is to constantly apply nature’s wisdom into the design of her furniture. The result is stylish and sophisticated furniture that echoes the hope of a better environment. This interpretation reflects el’s “eco-chic” approach to design.
Ms. Salisbury graduated with honors from the International Academy of Merchandising and Design in Chicago. She began her career in retail and furniture design in 1996 with 555 Automatic, a progressive design firm in Chicago, where she produced designs for such retail clients as DKNY, Armani, Gucci and Espirit. While at 555 Automatic, she designed the stainless steel sling chair, which has been recognized with several awards and accolades.
After her successful tenure at 555 Automatic, she moved to product design at Skyline Design, where she assisted in the launch of the firm’s new division, Coda. She then freelanced for Holly Hunt at the company’s Design Studio. Most recently, Ms. Salisbury served as an interior design manager for Torchia Associates, a well-regarded architectural firm in Chicago, where she was required to specify furniture and finishes for large commercial and residential spaces. Today, Ms. Salisbury launches el: Environmental Language with seasoned experience in retail, furniture and architectural design. |
