What inspired you to start your own business?
Becoming a freelance photographer was the answer to my calling of being a storyteller and a creative person.
What is a business milestone or achievement that you are most proud of?
A portrait of mine (of an NBA star) appeared on the cover of Esquire Magazine.
What challenges have you faced as a woman business owner, and how did you overcome them?
There have been countless challenges being a woman in the photography industry. Male photographers have historically dominated this business. It was especially hard to break into the advertising world, and it continues to be a challenge. It was also a challenge to be a female photographer working for a professional sports team — I experienced sexism from my boss — despite being hired for my skills and potential, I was told things that would not have been told to me if I was a man. I have overcome obstacles by constantly striving for excellence, and caring about both my subjects and my clients on any project I’m involved in..
What advice would you give to aspiring women entrepreneurs?
You are not alone! Seek out a strong support system of mentors and coaches you trust and respect, and become a sponge: ask lots of questions. Let your passions guide you, and dream big, always!
