What inspired you to start your own business?

I had a few unexpected challenges that hit me in my career – including surviving ovarian cancer and losing a job. I was very much still recovering from the traumatic experience of both in 2016 when my husband turned to me and told me to start a business and he knew I would be a success. I still was filled with so much self doubt so I consulted a family mentor who handed me a check for $10,000 and said “It’s a loan, go start your business.” She also told me there are no repayment terms on the loan because she has no doubt I will pay her back. Well in one year I did repay that loan and we have since grown to a seven-figure business, 15 employees, over 30 industry awards, hundreds of client projects and billions of media impressions. I could not be prouder of what I have achieved with Mekky Media.

What is a business milestone or achievement that you are most proud of?

By the end of 2021, six years into my journey with Mekky Media, we achieved record-breaking growth and revenue reaching a milestone of becoming a seven-figure business. The agency was elevated to these new heights by the steady influx of new, high-profile clients. During this time, I was able to double my team’s client roster and expand staff to nearly 15 full-time and contract members. Due to my leadership in driving the agency’s continuous growth and success across diverse clients, I was honored as 2023 Professional of the Year at the PRSA Chicago Skyline Awards.

Now eight years since the inception of the company, I am proud to say that Mekky Media serves an even wider range of clients, including our recent accomplishment of the iconic Giordano’s Famous Stuffed PIzza. The well-respected Chicago brand entrusted our agency to lead the strategic communications campaign for its 50th-anniversary celebration in 2024. Currently amid the multi-pronged campaign, we plan to expand Giordano’s media relations, creative activations and influencer engagement.

What challenges have you faced as a woman business owner, and how did you overcome them?

Realizing that the public relations industry can take a toll on mental health and work/life balance, when I started Mekky Media, I wanted to tackle this issue head-on. I prioritize mental health for both myself and my employees and have implemented virtual yoga and guided meditation sessions that everyone can participate in from home, often with their families as well. This has helped maintain a sense of community and well-being within the agency. In addition to virtual wellness activities, we prioritize team bonding, happy hours, professional development and DEI initiatives. These initiatives have taken priority, alongside the implementation of summer wellness days which are in full effect as well.

These challenges intensified during the COVID-19 lockdown. The uncertainty and disruption required me to shift my focus significantly toward positivity, self-care and health, appreciating small moments during such a turbulent time. This holistic approach was essential as I navigated questions and uncertainties from staff.

What advice would you give to aspiring women entrepreneurs?

My advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs is to advocate for yourself and your brand. Be your own cheerleader, confidently communicating your vision and promoting your accomplishments and the unique value your brand offers. It is also essential to assemble a team you can trust and count on. The right people will share your vision and bring a diverse set of skills and perspectives that complement your own.

Developing a consistent process and cultivating a positive work culture that you are proud of is also crucial. This includes creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported, which boosts morale, increases productivity and helps attract and retain top talent.

I also advise women entrepreneurs to devote time to long-term planning and strategic thinking. While day-to-day operations are vital to the success of a company, never lose sight of the bigger picture. Set clear goals for the future and develop actionable plans to achieve them. This foresight will help you navigate challenges and seize opportunities as they arise.

By advocating for yourself, building a trusted team, fostering a positive culture and committing to long-term planning, you can create a strong foundation for any field you are in and pave the way for sustained success. Remember, entrepreneurship is a journey filled with ups and downs! With resilience, determination and the right support, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your goals.
